How do you treat an eating disorder?

Support Groups

A support group is where people with a similar problem get together. It is a warm and welcoming place where they can talk about their experiences and listen to each other’s stories. In a support group, people feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged. They know that everyone in the room truly understands what they are going through. Support groups are often led by a professional or a trained volunteer. This person helps with the discussion and the organizing of group activities. Support groups can be helpful when used with other forms of therapy.

There are support groups on the internet where you can connect to online forums or chat rooms. These groups offer people the chance to share with one another even if they are not in the same city or country. An example of these groups are the Moderated Online Forums discussed under Other Approaches.

Support groups are not just for individuals with an eating disorder, or those who have recovered from an eating disorder. There are also support groups to help friends and family cope with their loved one’s illness. You can search for support groups across British Columbia by using the program locator.
